Basic Power Outage Preparedness

We must accept the fact that power outages will occur and it's up to us to be prepared and not rely on the landlord or Government or other non-profit agency. It's also a reality that during the Non-Hurricane season the power outages may be short but could be long enough to be a definite inconvenience, but if you are ready for One then you'll be prepared for anything that comes your way! So, in any power outage, you need to focus on your basic needs AND have a proactive action plan: Lights: Place battery operated lights in every room in a known location so they can be easily obtained in the dark. Water: Have 10 to 15 gallons of drinking water and the same amount for flushing and handwashing. Food: To be best prepared you should have 3 to 5 days' worth of food per person ready to go in emergencies. In general, you should focus on having non-perishable foods like canned vegetables, soups, nuts, and meats. A Small propane stove to heat canned goods could be helpful if you think you can manage one. Air Conditioner: If you don't have a generator then small battery-operated fans will help a lot. Lights and fans powered by a small generator, if you have one, will greatly reduce the stress of a power outage as well. First aid: If something is going to happen the most likely time is when you least expect it like during a power outage. So, a first aid kit can be important in an outage in case there is an injury. Cold Storage: Make sure your freezer is full and it'll stay frozen for many hours but even so only open your freezer/refrigerator if you have to. Personal: Call your friends and family to let them know you are ok. Safety: Try to avoid using candles as they are a great fire hazard. If you do have to use them make sure to keep them well away from flammable items. Note: These ideas aren’t everything you can or need to do to prepare, but it should get you started. If you have any questions you can contact John Jones @ BPHS. Our goal is not only to inform you but actively help you get the supplies you need to prepare yourself and your household for emergencies.

Acceptance or Ignorance?

It's that time of the year when everyone is supposed to be reminded to get ready for the hurricane season, so here goes! But first, let's deal with an important fact: We all will at some time face adverse situations like hurricanes, power & water outages, AC outages and many unknown things. The biggest problem for many is they can't or won't accept this. We must accept that life will throw us curve balls and that we can easily be prepared if we just put in a little effort. How do we do that you ask? Well I happen to have a non-exhaustive list to get everyone started. -Accept and Expect the unexpected and remember that most of them only affect us temporarily. -Learn how to render first aid. -Use the internet to always learn new things and solutions to problems. -Bring in your friends, family and neighbors to create a support network. -Keep your pantry stocked with water for drinking and flushing. -Create a basic plan of action for different known events and practice them to be more prepared. -Stay updated on current local, state and national events, especially weather ones. -Help others anytime when they are in need with no strings. -Communicate daily with your support network. Ask them to check on you if they don't hear from you. Remember you are the only one who can help yourself by being proactively prepared when something happens. One last thing. Please don't be afraid to ask for help. There are many organizations and people in the village who will absolutely be willing to help you in many ways.
