Strawberry Ridge Pet Registry or Protect A Pet Initiative (PAPI)

Helping Our Pets Find Their Way Home

<>

Pets are family. But sometimes a gate is left open, a door doesn't close, or a pet finds a way to escape. PAPI is a community resource designed to help reunite lost pets with their owners. Residents can voluntarily register their pets with a photo, identifying information, and owner contact information.

This information is kept in a protected area and is not publicly accessible. If a pet is found in Strawberry Ridge, the finder can contact PAPI, and a search can be initiated. One photo and a little information today could help bring your pet home tomorrow.

A Community Effort: PAPI is based on a simple idea: neighbors helping neighbors—and helping our pets. Finding a lost pet can be frightening for the owner and confusing for the person who finds it. PAPI provides another connection between the two. Sometimes, having the right information at the right time can make the difference between a lost pet and a reunited pet.

Do I Need to Use PAPI? NO! PAPI is designed primarily for Strawberry Ridge and surrounding neighborhoods, but it is not the only resource available. Petco's Love Lost Pet Registry is a free, nationwide pet-reunification service where you can register your pet, report a lost pet, or report a found pet. We recommend using both PAPI and Petco Love Lost whenever possible. There is no harm in having your pet registered in more than one place—and it gives you another resource if your pet ever gets lost. We won't be offended if you register with them and not with PAPI! Our only goal is to help get lost pets back home.

🐾Register your pet somewhere. The best time to prepare is before your pet gets lost.🐾

How the Protect-A-Pet Initiative Works

1. Register Your Pet: Residents provide basic information to help identify their pet:

Pet's name and recent photo(s)
Breed/type, color and markings
Approximate age and sex
Other unique identifying features
Owner's name and contact information
Microchip information, if applicable

2. Your Information Stays Private: Your information is stored in a protected section of the website. It is not publicly searchable or available to the general public. Access is intended only to help identify a lost pet when appropriate.

3. A Pet Is Found: If someone finds a pet in Strawberry Ridge, they can contact PAPI. We will search the Registry and compare the found pet with registered pets to look for a possible match.

4. Help Get the Pet Home: If a possible match is found, the owner can be contacted using the information provided during registration.

The goal is simple: Identify the Pet. Find the Owner. Get the Pet Home.

Why Register Your Pet?

You may think, "My dog would never get out." We hope you're right. But pets can surprise us. A loose dog, a frightened cat, an open gate, a broken screen, a visitor leaving a door open, or even a storm can result in a pet getting outside. When that happens, having a recent photograph and detailed description can make identifying the pet much easier.

The Protect A Pet Registry gives our community another tool to help reunite pets with their families. It's better to have your pet registered and never need it than to need it and not have.

Keep Your Pet's Information Updated

Registering your pet is only the first step. An outdated phone number can be almost as frustrating as having no phone number at all. Please remember to update your information if: You get a new telephone number, You change your email address, You move or Your pet's appearance changes significantly, Your pet gets a new collar or identification tag Your pet receives a microchip, Your microchip registration information changes, Your pet passes away or is no longer living with you.

Protect Your Pet Before It Gets Lost

A few simple precautions can reduce the chance of a pet getting loose. Consider:

✓ Keep tags current: Make sure your pet's collar has current contact information.

✓ Microchip your pet: Talk with your veterinarian about microchipping.

✓ Keep microchip information updated: Make sure your current contact information is registered with the microchip company.

✓ Check gates and fences: Look for loose boards, gaps, damaged screens, or places where a determined pet might escape.

✓ Keep a recent photograph: A clear photograph can be extremely useful if your pet goes missing.

✓ Register your pet with the Protect A Pet Initiative: Give our community another way to help identify your pet if it gets loose.

I FOUND A PET — WHAT SHOULD I DO?

<>

Finding a lost dog or cat can be an emotional experience. You may want to help, but you may not know where to begin. Don't assume the pet has been abandoned. Someone may be looking for their beloved family member right now.

Hillsborough County Lost & Found Pet FAQS

Here are some steps from the Initiative that you

can take to help get the pet you found safely home.

1. Keep Yourself and the Pet Safe: Approach the animal slowly and calmly. A frightened or confused pet may behave differently than it normally would. Don't put yourself in danger trying to catch an animal that appears aggressive, injured, or extremely frightened. If the animal is injured or poses a safety risk, contact the appropriate animal services or emergency resource.

2. Look for Items like: Collar, Identification tag, Name tag, Telephone number, Other and visible identification. If you find contact information, try contacting the owner directly.

3. Take a Good Photograph of the Pet and Capture: The pet's face &Full body, Any Distinctive markings, Collar or tags, and Any unusual identifying features. A good photograph can be extremely helpful when searching for the owner.

4. Contact the Strawberry Ridge Pet Registry: This is where the Protect A Pet Initiative can help. Contact the Strawberry Ridge Pet Registry and let us know that you have found a pet. We'll start to look for the found pet with photographs and identifying information submitted by Strawberry Ridge residents. The Registry is not publicly searchable. It is designed specifically to help connect a found pet with its registered owner while helping protect residents' private information.

5. We'll Check the Registry Carefully: We'll look for similarities such as: Breed or type, Color, Size, Facial markings, Coat markings, Collar, Age, Sex, and Other distinctive characteristics. If we believe we've have found a match, We'll contact the Owners.

6. Look Beyond the Registry: Not every pet will be registered. The owner may not live in Strawberry Ridge, may not have registered the pet yet, or may simply not have had an opportunity to do so.

Consider checking other resources, including: Local animal shelters, Animal services, Veterinary offices, Local lost-and-found pet organizations, Community social media groups, and Neighborhood lost-pet postings. A combination of resources may increase the chances of finding the owner.

7. Have the Pet Scanned for a Microchip: If possible, take the pet to a veterinarian, animal shelter, or other facility that can scan for a microchip. A microchip may provide information that leads directly back to the owner.

8. Don't Forget About the Collar: A pet may have both a microchip and a collar. If there is a telephone number on the tag, call it. If the tag contains other identifying information, use that information to help locate the owner.

9. Keep the Pet Separate From Your Own Animals: If you have pets of your own, use caution when bringing a strange animal into your home. Even a friendly animal may be frightened or carrying an illness that could potentially affect your pets. If possible, keep the found pet separated from your animals until you can determine where it belongs.

10. Report the Found Pet: If you are unable to locate the owner, contact the appropriate local animal services or shelter and report the found animal. Keep a record of: Where you found the pet, When you found it, What it looked like, Any identification found, Who you contacted. This information may become useful if the owner is located later.

Most Important: Don't Give Up Looking Too Quickly

A pet can travel farther than you might expect. The owner may be searching nearby, calling the pet's name, checking neighbors' yards, contacting shelters, and posting online. Your willingness to spend a little time helping could make an enormous difference to someone in our community.

The Protect-A-Pet-Initiative is an important tool.

Find the pet. Identify the pet. Find the owner. Bring them home.

And if you own a pet yourself, consider registering before you ever need the Registry.

Because the best time to prepare for a lost pet is before your pet gets lost.
